Bring Back the Dump Truck!
I guess we'll be calling the Dump Truck...
P.S. I'll be at the Jags game Sunday night (Yay!), though it might be an extremely painful game the way things are going with the Steelers (Boo...)

Seriously, Damn.
On a positive note, I don't remember if I ever posted this article about my dear friend, Abramz, in Uganda and the work he's doing there. You know, I might have mentioned a Break Dance Project in Uganda once or twice on this blog...
He's still doing amazing work in Uganda and has been getting a lot of support from different organizations. Although he didn't get selected for CNN Heroes (which I nominated him for) he's undoubtedly a hero and inspiration to many, myself unabashedly included.

I Don't Think Wolverine Would Be Flattered
Generations of children (okay, and adults) have emulated Wolverine, who knew African frogs would beat us to his awesome mutant superpower? And the resemblence is quite unsettling:
I wouldn't want to run into that frog after it's been once again rejected by the psychic frog who is already taken by a preppy laser beaming frog, and yet said frog can't help himself but to love anyways.

The Seahawks' Spittle Shocker!
A 24-year-old South Kitsap man — and self-proclaimed Seattle Seahawks fan — was arrested Sunday for allegedly spitting on the hamburger he prepared for a man wearing Pittsburgh Steelers attire, according to Kitsap County Sheriff's Office reports. This is too hilarious to even be mad about, well, unless someone spit in my burger, of course. I think this Steelers fan can take one for the team.
Deputies said the 37-year-old man in Steelers garb took his daughters to a Mile Hill Drive fast food restaurant Saturday evening, and "began trading friendly barbs about his team and their victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL," reports said.
One employee told the man that he'd "better not say that to the guy that's making your food," but the man thought it was a joke, reports said.
That is, until he opened his "clamshell-style" hamburger container and discovered what he called a "loogie" on his hamburger.
The 37-year-old told his daughters to stop eating, demanded a refund and called the restaurant's district manager.
A deputy was informed by the manager that the person responsible may be a 24-year-old South Kitsap man who was near his quitting time when the incident occurred.
Eventually, the man confessed to spitting in the 37-year-old's hamburger container to "gross him out ... because he was a Steelers fan," deputies said.
He was booked into the Kitsap County jail for fourth-degree assault and possession of marijuana and released.

The Vagina Monologues.
Now I don't read magazines much and so I'm just getting to the end of this issue when I find an article on women having cosmetic surgery on their genitals!! From injecting the mythical (and unproven) G-Spot with liquid similar to the lip injections (collagen) to make it more "plump" and sensitive (for about $1,850) to cosmetic labia reshaping, vaginal tightening, liposuction of the mons pubis and reduction of the skin around the clitoris, apparently this is all the rage now.
Here's a testimony from the article on the G-Spot injection:
"It's like having a mini-heartbeat in my crotch," she explains, a sensation that arouses her even during yoga and Spinning classes, or when she drives along bumpy roads. During sex, Staltare says, she has volcanic, multiple orgasms "like huge waves that keep lifting me higher and higher."When confronted about the fact that it has not been scientifically proven that the "G-Spot" has any sexual powers, Dr. Matlock (from the E! channel show Dr. 90210 who routinely performs these sorts of procedures) asks "Does God exist?" You can hear the sound, scientific reasoning behind that response...
I can understand why a women would do the G-Spot injection if she was struggling to have an orgasm, I've known girls who have gotten their clitoris pierced for the same reason, but the price tag for the inject (which usually wears off in about four months) is a little steep to me, especially since you know insurance would never cover it.
But it's the vagina reshaping surgery that really baffles me. One young college student who had labia reshaping surgery states:
"I've never wanted my boobs done or any kind of plastic surgery, but my labia made me very uncomfortable."The self-consciousness started, she says, when she noticed that her labia minora was longer than those of other girls. And then, of course, a boyfriend of hers made her aware of the labia reshaping surgery when she confided her labia insecurities to him. First of all, how the heck did she notice other girls' labia? I played a sport in high school (well, ran cross country), gone to the gym, changed in front of numerous girlfriends, even showered with a girlfriend once in a time pinch (and in a rather large shower, so don't get any ideas!), and I have not Once seen another girl's vagina or noticed her labia. The surgery for this girl deformed her labia more since they just sliced it and she was left with a whole lot of bleeding and with the labia unevenly cut at an angle. She ended up having to pay for more surgery to reconstruct her labia totaling her costs to nearly $14,000 out of pocket.
I'm completely aghast at this obsession for the "perfect vagina." I'm already quite disdained at the country's obsession with perfection and beauty, but this is literally taking it too far. Who decides what a "sexy" vagina looks like? The article states that doctors have treated patients for labia reshaping from the ages of 14 to 60! I personally think it should be consider neglect for parents to let their child get this surgery. A doctor states that he is helping these people because they're so self conscious that they won't wear a bathing suit at the beach. While I'm completely confused as to how a large labia would be obvious enough in a bathing suit to cause embarrassment, I'm extremely annoyed that young girls can just walk in and get this surgery with little difficulty. Even for Gastric Bypass there is an extensive psychological work done beforehand to make sure that it is a medical necessity and not just for looks or because someone doesn't feel like working the weight off. Now I know GB is a lot more intrusive than labia surgery, but labia surgery can definitely go wrong and can actually be so painful that sex is not possible or even desensitize the area so the woman has little to no sexual feeling left afterwards. Overall, there has been very little proof that these surgeries lead to long-term happiness in women or that there aren't any complications down the road, and mostly this proof has not been gathered because the doctors who are providing these procedures are unwilling to share their client list in order to conduct research on their effectiveness. Their reluctance is proof enough to me that this surgery is completely unnecessary and useless and the doctors know it.
I mean what else can women be made to be insecure about? I wouldn't say that I'm always happy with my body and I'm definitely not perfect. Hell, my boobs are completely different cup sizes! But has that ever bothered me or my husband? Other than bra shopping, not at all. And hey, if my husband had to pick my breasts out of a boob line-up, he'd know mine right away. Plus, I think he likes the variety. So why not take your "imperfections" and view them as unique special things about yourself instead of things that need to be fixed? Because frankly, once these women get their vagina surgery done I guarantee you they will find something else they hate about themselves in no time...

Crazy Halloween Story...
I so wanted to take a picture because it was just about one of the oddest sights I've ever seen, but obviously that would have been a bit insensitive. The poor guy had been stuck there for at least 30 minutes. Oh, and did I mention that the guy was for some reason in his boxers and his undershirt? It appears that he had wiggled out of his clothes after getting stuck at an attempt to make himself skinnier to try to get unstuck because there was a pile of clothes on the floor of the parking garage at his feet. After a while it was hard to keep a straight face. He had obviously been drinking and for some reason had thought he should climb up the parking garage to the fourth floor, where his brother lived.
So the firetrucks came and they unscrewed the fence from the wall so he could get out. If you can imagine about ten firemen, a couple of EMTs, police people and then me, my brother and hubby all crowded around this guy watching as they free him. Oh yeah, and some random little boy was there too.
And P.S. Hubby and I were talking about this last night and he told me that after the dude got free he had his hands up like he was under arresst and it took multiple people to convince him that he was okay and could put his hands down... this just keeps getting funnier and funnier! Soooo wish I had that picture! Hubs said we should have video taped it and put it on YouTube. Now That would have been funny.
I'm not sure if any alcohol induced craziness will top that tonight.

The Story of the Cursed House
We're happily painting the bedrooms of our house, waiting for our stuff to arrive from Ohio in a couple of days when we notice we're sweating profusely. Now, hubs and I are pretty good sweaters, but this was ridiculous. We check the air conditioning vents, air's-a-blowing but it's definitely Not cold air. The air conditioning's broken. So only a couple days into our home warranty and a day before our stuff arrives, our air conditioning's busted. Did I mention it's the middle of the summer here? The air conditioning guy can't come until the day After we get our stuff, so we have to move in with the house at around 85-90 degrees Fahrenheit. And don't even get me started on sleeping in that temperature! Hubby was like, well at least you've been to Africa, you should be used to sleeping in this heat. And I laughed, it wasn't even near as bad in Uganda as it was in our house! The dorms we slept in were made of concrete and were actually quite cool and comfortable. Not hot at all.
Fine, we're sweating balls, but our stuff is coming, and according to the movers, early in the afternoon the next day. We're excited until the morning of the move I step on a piece of glass in our kitchen. Now remember, we haven't moved anything in yet, so this glass was from the previous owners and I had no idea to beware of it. So I'm hobbling around like a gimp for a while until hubby can come home and take the glass out of the heal of my foot, and even after that it still hurts enough that I limp a bit. Hubs takes off work so he can help facilitate the move and we wait. And we wait. The movers don't arrive until 6pm! Irritated but still glad our stuff is here we're further surprised that there are only two men to move our stuff weighing 10,000 lbs! They ask if we know anyone in the neighborhood that would like to make a couple extra bucks, we do not, having just moved in and all, and so hubby and I help, despite being irritated because that's why we hired movers so We wouldn't have to do it and the fact that I'm still limping around a bit. Not even twenty minutes into the move, it starts to thunder and so we just move everything into our garage. It rains. While it rains, hubby and I are moving stuff into their rooms, unwrapping the covers off our furniture, etc. and the movers are chatting and chilling in their truck. I could have strangled someone.
Finally we get the move done with some major damage to our side and coffee table which are pretty much brand new and also some broken dishes. The next day all is going fine as I unpack, nothing major broken except for the broken dishes, which aren't the end of the world but a bit of a bummer. The air conditioning guy comes, tells us we have a leak in a coil and that he's not sure that our home warranty will cover it because our plan is so new (grrrrrrrr, why even have the darn thing then?) and since he has to go through the home warranty company with approval before he does anything, he couldn't fix our air conditioning then. We still haven't heard from our home warranty company and the air conditioning is still broke.
We have a nice dinner with a friend visiting from out of town and come back home, I'm in the kitchen reaching up to turn off the light on the fan by pulling the chain and CRASH, the light comes smashing down onto the kitchen island and the floor. I scream bloody murder and hubs comes running downstairs. Somehow the whole light came crashing down and shattered and yet not one shatter hit me. Thank goodness for that island that made it so I wasn't directly under the light. Glass shards are everywhere and hubby and I clean it up the best we can, but inevitably hubby gets cut on the foot the next morning and I have to pick glass bits out of the dogs' food bowls.
Needless to say, our house is cursed and it hates us.
And I didn't even mention the leaky toilet or the broken faucet handle. Sigh, the joys of owning a new home.

Disturbing, Disappointing, Disgusting.
Sorry, I'm so disgusted that I'm puking out of my ears. If I met these parents I'd literally beat them down.
The picture says it all and is as disturbing as it gets:

I feel so badly for that poor girl that has absolutely no one in the world to protect her now.

Everybody, Get A Life!
I had a girlfriend a few years back who constantly gave me crap for liking the Steelers and more specifically Ben. She was working in Findley, but hadn't grown up there, and was always telling me everyone said he was a jerk and she heard he was a womanizer, etc. I never really paid attention to her because people gossip and to me gossip is as empty as air. But what did bug me was that when he came home the summer after his rookie year she was calling me in the middle of the night gushing, "Oh my gosh, I just saw Ben at a bar. Now I'm going to this other bar I heard he went!" Then later called him a jerk because apparently she was yelling at him to get him to talk to her while he was talking to somebody else and his body guards had to ask her to leave him alone. Later she found out he was talking to an old high school friend. So anyways, people are fickle and in many ways seem to be desperate to be associated with someone "famous" because that will make you suddenly important. The stories that flew from my friend's mouth of her friends who hooked up with Ben and whatnot were ridiculous and sad. I really didn't care about which bar Ben drank at or who he may or may not have hooked up with, but it was disappointing to see a friend grasp at fame in that way.Well, looks like she's not the only one, and at least her grasping was with the real Ben. It disturbs me how desperately I feel our society clings to celebrities, it's like a high school popularity contest or something. I sympathize with the girls who were duped by Jackson, but you truly had to be desperate to think that man even looked like a football player. I'd heard about this guy before, but ESPN was nice enough to put all of his offenses in one nice article.
As for Jackson, WTF dude, get a life. YOUR OWN!

Technically Inept
It first started with the fact that when I got my lost luggage back from British Airlines and found everything suspiciously soaked (though I found nothing broken in the luggage and also found out my trip companions also found their luggage in a similar condition). My cell phone charger was soaked, but my phone was dead so I decided to shake it around a little bit then plug it into my phone. It not only did not work but I think it damaged my battery since after that incident my phone has just turned of randomly (when the battery's not even close to done) and then is all scrambled when I try to turn it back on.
Then I lose my second blue tooth... okay, that has nothing to do with my technology ineptness, but it just sucks. Luckily I was able to find this one (the first one I lost is gone forever), especially since this blue tooth is really my hubby's, who insisted that I take it so I wouldn't kill myself when I talk on the phone in the car. (Yeah, he's sweet, isn't he?)
Then I fry my laptop, possibly damaging the hard drive, which means losing everything on the computer... I had most of my stories backed up, but not all, and all my pictures and music is on the laptop... I mean ALL of my pictures from last year which I hadn't backed up yet. My laptop will be examined by a computer doctor today and I'm just praying that we can retrieve the data. I really don't care if the laptop is trashed, I just want my data. :( Grrrr, how I wish I weren't so technically inept.
So, say I do need to buy a new laptop, any suggestions? I was really unhappy with the Dell laptop that I have now because it would overheat too easily (hence it's current fried condition) and I've heard that this is a common problem in Dells. I'm thinking of switching over to the dark side of Macs, but I'm a little scared, not going to lie...
Sorry for the lack of posts as of recent, since I had no computer at home I was unable to continue my Uganda posts nor post my review for Brett Battles' The Cleaner, both of which I'll get to very soon, I promise!
I also wanted to mention that I'm getting completely out of hand with my book obsession. It has finally happened that I've forgotten which books I own and I added a book to my Amazon wish list that I already have! Luckily I happened to see it in my bookcase and deleted it from my wish list before I bought it, but I thought it was a note worthy moment in my book obsession.

Very Grave Weddings
A ring of gangsters who traded in the bodies of women they murdered, selling them as brides to keep dead bachelors happy in the afterlife, has been arrested in China. The arrests have exposed a trade that places a higher value on women when they are dead than when they are alive.
Yang Dongyan, 35, was arrested on January 4 in Sha’anxi province as he played cards with his children. In his prison cell, Mr Yang showed little remorse for committing two murders. He told the Legal Daily: “I just wanted to make money. It’s a quick way to make money. I was arrested too soon otherwise I had planned to do this business a few more times.”
The article continues with more creepy professional murdering of brides-to-be stories, but really, that should be enough to creep the hell out of you. I feel like this is straight out of that old TV show that used to scare the shit out of me when I was a youngster, Tales From the Crypt.
Thanks to Mick Hartley for filling my dreams with hellish nightmares for the night.

The Hidden Genocide
I've wanted to adopt from China since I did a project on the One-Child Rule in China. I learned about the hidden genocide of baby girls that occurred as soon as the law was put into affect in 1979 and I have no doubt that the genocide continues. I read stories of baby girls being found in gutters and allies, often chewed on by wild dogs. Baby girls were drowned and suffocated and thrown out with that week's trash.Recently, I've been baffled by the recent reports that there's such a high demand for Chinese babies that they're actually running out and have therefore constructed even stricter restrictions for International Adoption. I first heard of this talking to a friend (I honestly can't remember who, otherwise I'd send her this article) who said that they're running out of Chinese babies. I didn't believe her for a second because I was very aware of the situation in China and the fact that baby girls are still loathed to the Chinese who'd rather have a boy as their only child rather than a girl. But I was baffled at the news that the Chinese government has increased the restrictions on adoptions and are granting fewer babies to International applicants. It is distressing news to someone who cares deeply about the baby girls in China and also to a prospective adopter.
This New York Tims article (thanks for sending it my way, hubby!) touches on some of the possible reasons for China reining in foreign adoption:
The issue of abandoned and institutionalized children remains a taboo subject in China, a problem the government does not even acknowledge exists. The impulse to hide it seems to stem partly from embarrassment and partly from fear of revealing the grave human rights abuses the one-child policy has produced; surely, watching a parade of well-off foreigners cart off thousands of babies would make the Chinese authorities understandably uncomfortable. If I know anything about Chinese culture it's that it is a very proud culture, so I can buy this reasoning. What I can't buy is that nobody's doing anything about a very obvious human rights violation. According the the Times:
Just to give you an idea of the new stricter guidelines for international adopters:According to a February 2005 report in The Weekend Standard, a Chinese business newspaper, demographers in China found a ratio of 117 boys per 100 girls under the age of 5 in the 2000 census. Thanks to China’s one-child policy, put into effect in 1979 in order to curb population growth, and a strong cultural preference for male children, this gender gap could result in as many as 60 million “missing” girls from the population by the end of the decade, enough to alarm even Chinese officials.
And what happened to these girls? According to the International Planned Parenthood Federation (a term that takes on a whole new meaning when referring to China), there are about seven million abortions in China per year, 70 percent of which are estimated to be of females. That adds up to around five million per year, or 50 million by the end of the decade; so where are the other 10 million girls? If even 10 percent end up in orphanages... well, you do the math.
Yeah, a little crazy there. Also, no mental or physical illnesses and no disabled persons. So far, once I turn thirty, I'll still be eligible. But then the process right now takes between 16-24 months, nearly double what it used to take. You truly have to wonder if China's putting its image or the children first with these new guidelines. After all I know overweight and disabled people who'd make much better parents then some of those image obsessed people running around out there, so using that as a guideline seems extreme and unnecessary, if not prejudice. But history tells us that China has rarely put their baby girls first over anything, ever. And so one can only assume that the orphanages (which China Rarely lets foreigners visit, you need permission from the government to visit any orphanage in China) are still overcrowded with unwanted baby girls, perhaps not murdered by their parents, but slowly being murdered through malnutrition and disease by the China's pride.Under the new Chinese adoption guidelines, the international adoption celebrity Angelina Jolie could not adopt from China (she’s not married, and alas, she and Brad have more than two divorces between them, which is a no-no); nor could the actress Meg Ryan (again, not married). Another person who is not eligible is yours truly. My husband is over 50, so I would have to trade him in, marry again, wait the required five years (another new rule) before beginning the adoption process, and by that time I would be sneaking up on 50 myself.
It is comforting to know that Madonna is still eligible, at least until she turns 50, gets fat (the new regulations call for a body mass index of less than 40), gets divorced or goes broke (anyone with a net worth of under $80,000 is excluded).

Holiday Madness
A few items to note:
I am perpetually the Indianapolis Colts of Fantasy Football. Last year and this year I made it in the playoffs in both of my leagues with either the best record or second best and both years in both leagues I lost in the first round of the playoffs. As my friend said, it's my goal next year to be the Buffalo Bills of Fantasy Football, of course I may be in only one league next year since I won't be in my current job where I'm in the work league, so there will be less chances for me to make it to the big game, but I gotta dream big, right?
I have a huge headache over the strict carry-on policies now-a-days at airports. It's been especially troubling since I have to spend the night one night at JFK on my way to Uganda, possibly by myself. But obviously bathroom products will be strictly regulated making my life just that much more difficult. Most troubling to me, however is the "One item of reading material" rule. Really, what's the point of that? If I spending the night by myself then I'll definitely need more than one item of reading material.
And Steelers' fans are rampant in North Carolina? Who would have thunk it? I guess it makes sense since it's pretty much directly South of Pennsylvania, and Cowher's moving there after all, I wonder if that'll pull some Steelers' fan into the area. But I've heard from many different sources now that North Carolina is pretty much Steelers' Country... all the more reason to move there. What a relief it'll be to finally be in friendly territory!
